Historical 1870: Jewett-Bass Hall

Jewett-Bass Hall is a two-story structure at 13310 Midlothian Turnpike. It is the only nineteenth-century commercial brick building still standing in Chesterfield County. It was originally built in 1870 by two brothers, George H. and John W. Jewett.

From 1870 until the early 1950s, the building served Midlothian as a general store. The second floor was used as living quarters . . . George and John Jewett ran the store until the 1920s when they sold it to Mr. and Mrs. L. Shelby Bass. The Bass’s not only ran the store but a generator as well and often sold their excess electricity back to residents of Midlothian.

The store was taken over by Jefferson Cosby and son in the 1940s and then served as a bicycle shop in the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1980s, a commercial kitchen was added to the rear of the building and it was transformed into a restaurant.

In 1988, Mount Pisgah bought the Jewett-Bass Store to gain badly needed Sunday School and meeting room space. This was a fitting purpose for it was the Jewett brothers, who had built the store, who in 1877 also gave Mt. Pisgah the original piece of land on which the chapel now resides.

Today, JB Hall has been extensively renovated, and is now a restaurant and owned by the Dunlap's.

Meet Chef Dunlap

Chef Dunlap graduated from Le Cordon Bleu California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, CA. Upon graduation, he worked under Executive Chef Jung at the five-star, five diamond, El Encanto Hotel in Santa Barbara, CA. where he learned to utilize fresh, seasonal ingredients. After two years at El Encanto Hotel, Chef Dunlap took on the role as Chef de Partie at the five-star, five diamond, Four Seasons Biltmore in Santa Barbara, CA. Here, Dunlap learned about food and wine pairings, and how to develop and execute menus that met the expectations and palates of some of the world's most famous and prestigious celebrities.

In 2008, Chef Dunlap and his family moved to NOVA where Dunlap opened Alain Ducasse’s Adour Restaurant as Chef de Partie in Washington, DC. It was there, working under Ducasse, one of the chefs that holds the most Michelin Stars in the world, that Chef Dunlap developed the finer points of his culinary approach.

After working at Adour for two years, Dunlap took a role as Sous Chef at the 1 Michelin star, Plume Restaurant at The Jefferson Hotel in DC. Chef Dunlap was then recruited by, The Inn at Little Washington, which holds 3 Michelin stars, and was promoted to Executive Sous Chef. Working at The Inn at Little Washington was life changing for David. Working directly with Chef Patrick O'Connell and learning from him while having the opportunity to work with some of the best ingredients possible, shaped Chef Dunlap's career forever.

After two years at The Inn at Little Washington, Chef became the Executive Chef at The Ashby Inn, followed by a position as Corporate Executive Chef of Quirk Hotels, Quirk Richmond and Quirk Charlottesville.

In January of 2021, Chef Dunlap and his wife Brittany opened Midlothian Chef's Kitchen, which has won numerous awards. An opportunity came up to open another restaurant, welcome 1870, a new restaurant by the Dunlap team.
